The Birth of Mario: Uncovering the Origins of Jumpman and Donkey Kong

The Game Boy revived the rivalry with its excellent Donkey Kong (’94), and Nintendo Software Technology has kept up the franchise with its Mario Vs. It’s a well-executed arcade game that achieves everything a solid quarter-muncher should.

As we all know, Donkey Kong and Mario continue to antagonize each other to this very day. The 1981 classic was a groundbreaking game that provided a fabulous exercise in comprehension and understanding to me, and even when I replay the game today, I still appreciate its excellent simplicity. Despite being terrible at it – reaching the second stage was a rarity – it didn't matter.

I have strong feelings about this game because my first game was Donkey Kong, which I played on my Colecovision console. The construction site motif, with Jumpman's occupation as a carpenter, may explain his knack for using hammers to smash anything that got in his way. It's a good thing, too, as Jumpman would have to leap over barrels, fireballs, pits, pies, and jacks on his quest to rescue his girlfriend Pauline from the angry ape.

Jumpman's first game would be an astounding success, one that would lead to his becoming one of the finest developers in the history of the medium. In fact, Donkey Kong was the brainchild of Shigeru Miyamoto, who was tasked with transforming unwanted Radarscope cabinets into something that would sell. And sell it did, taking the gaming world by storm and cementing Jumpman's place as a legendary character.

Before Super Mario Bros., I had dropped the art galleries featured in the original posts for brevity's sake, as well as removing some unnecessary elements. This post is a first attempt to properly chronicle some sort of history of video gaming, as well as the earliest games that have impacted my life in a more critical fashion.

The rivalry between Donkey Kong and Mario continues to this day, with each new installment building on the previous ones. And for me, playing Donkey Kong on the arcade cabinet remains a cherished memory, one that I still appreciate today.
